From every single disney-related topic we've discuss, from favorite disney characters to favorite disney movies and even favorite disney princes and princesses, villains, including songs, I'm surprised outta all of this, we've never came close to discussing about disney sequels. I've heard from a few people that said Walt Disney himself never wanted any sequels to continue onto these timeless classics, and yet the company started going against his wishes during the 90s all the way through to the late 2000s.
And since Frozen 2 is still being developed, and Wreck-It Ralph 2 won't be released sometime after next year, I thought it would be best for us to talk about which disney sequels we loved/like and hated/dislike the most, even if you thought it was only okay.
My top favorite disney sequels (in no particular order) are The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride, The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, and Lady and the Tramp 2: Scamp's Adventure. I chose those three because despite seeing so many disney sequels growing up, those three were the only ones I watch more the most. As you may of notice, TLK2 is probably maybe the most fan favorite of them all. TLM2, despite it's lazy reversed plot, still I think holds up pretty enjoyable in my own opinion. And I think the only reason why Lady and the Tramp 2 is well likable because Angel became a fan favorite for all fans, and who can blame them for that? I like her too lol
Mulan 2, Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch has a Glitch, Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas, and Pocahontas 2: Journey to a New World are probably the only few ones I can think of I would most likely put on the liked list because well...I dunno, for some reason, I guess you can say they're a bit more of those type of movies you can watch every now and then, but not too often. I think what's more shocking I could say about the Lilo and Stitch sequel is that not only is it the first and only one with a PG rating (the rest of the sequels, including the prequels themselves, were all rated G) but also one of the more RAREST kind of sequels that gives you an emotional feeling to it much like the original. I was very well pleased that they used the same animation style like the first one had, because a lot of the direct-to-video sequels had animation that either really terrible or not too bad looking.
(The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2 is one of the few I can honestly say has the worst looking animation ever. It's such an eye sore to be viewing from beginning to end!) The rest of them all I can say I thought they were decently okay, even if they were something you would watch only once and that was it.
However, the ONLY one disney sequel I hated the most was Brother Bear 2. Believe it or not, I was already well aware that a lot of people dislike the disney sequels so much and I never understood why, until I finally came across BB2. When it was first announced that Brother Bear was getting a sequel, I got super excited for it until the plot for it was revealed and then it completely ruined for it me all the way, but I still ended up watching it just to see how it was, and just like I had predicted it, I completely hated it. Not only did it felt forced and pointless, but it also open my eyes to how poorly done direct-to-video sequels (in generally so to speak) can be dumb down a lot.
So you can imagine my surprise when I heard that John Lasseter (one of the most well known workers from Pixar) became in charge of the whole chairman CEO at Disney, and because of him, we no longer have anymore DTV disney sequels, or midquels for that matter. I even heard that Pixar themselves will be taking a long break from sequels after they're releasing Toy Story 4 and The Incredibles 2 since we got Cars 3 coming on the way this summer. So while I can say that it's kinda upsetting because this means we won't be able to see any sequels for even the more OLDER disney films, this is probably for the best. =/
On the bright side, since John Lassester quickly became executive producer on today's more recent disney films, such as Moana, Zootopia, Big Hero 6, Frozen, Tangled, Wreck-It Ralph, and even Bolt and The Princess and the Frog, Disney is still on top of it's game. So chances are, in case any of these newer flicks do get any sequels, it sounds like we're most likely going to see them on the big screen again (because the last time we ever did see a disney sequel end up at the theaters (officially canon so to speak) was The Rescuers Down Under. And yes, I do know that Return to Neverland and The Jungle Book 2 were release in theaters also, but they were done by DisneyToon Studios, the same company who made all of those direct-to-video sequels in the first place!)
