This is news to me, but has anyone been noticing the more recent animated movies we're getting, the darker they're becoming? Just recently, I appear to be realizing this the second someone brought it up on IMDB. I can actually think of a couple of them that are pretty dark; Legend of the Guardians, Rango, The Black Cauldron, How to Train Your Dragon. Even Kung Fu Panda 2 had some of it's highly dark spotting areas more than the original had presented. Not to mention there was also Toy Story 3 when horror music was playing during the torture scenes and to the part where they almost got toasted! Now I'm not saying that this is a big deal for me (or most of us) but whatever happen to the good times when we grew up with something that wasn't so....scary? I guess you can say I'm feeling a little bit concern how kids at this generation are viewing this, because we don't have anymore G rated movies and I don't want to see them freaking out! But if you look at it this way, it's also pretty good how it's capturing older audiences!

Well the Black Cauldron was in Disney's dark days of the 80's which ended with the Little Mermaid.
I haven't seen Rango or Kung Fu Panda so I will have to take your word on those lol.
But I do agree with your points about Toy Story 3 and Legend of the Guardians.

Animated films have had dark themes in them since cavemen have been painting images on cave walls. Its really nothing new; its just that our present-day mainstream culture is starting to see that animated films can't only be made for kids. Many countries have made animated films with mature themes in them and even America has had its share of adult animators. Have you ever heard of Ralph Bakshi? Not only did some of his movies have dark themes in them, but they were also pretty risque with full nudes drawn on celluloid.
Of course, whether or not kids can handle dark themes in animated pictures really depends on the individual kid and how their parents handle them watching them; I grew up watching Don Bluth films, which a lot of them had some pretty scary scenes for kids and even for ome adults, but I turned out okay.
