I find it ironic that a lot of people out there like the movie, Anastasia, but also hate Thumbelina at the same time, which is a little puzzling to me. Both follow a basic Disney princess musical rip-off formula, both are directed by Don Bluth, both made in the 90s (not a very good decade for the poor director), so my question is why the double standard? I'm curious to know and maybe someone who's a fan (or not) can enlighten me on the subject.

I don't hate Thumbelina. I like it just not as much as I like Anastasia since Thumbelina has a lower target audience I think but as far as both films go I think they are both great.

That's weird! I don't think there's anyone I met that hated Thumbelina. It's a fine movie, but it has it's most weirdest standards. I like Anastasia more because I've grown up with that film since I first saw it at the theaters when I was 8.
Now that you mention the not-a-very-good-decade part, I have been noticing all of his 90s films seem to hit a very poor low hit. Expect for Anastasia, I heard it did fine with the critics. I think when Don Bluth was making those films, he had a hard time becoming popular due to the harsh time those days were.

That's weird! I don't think there's anyone I met that hated Thumbelina. Yeah, often times people will complain about the animation, the voice acting, the music, the fact that Thumbelina is a pessimist, etc. The Nostalgia Chick even made a not-so-kind review of the movie complaining about all that (but than again, she hates The Little Mermaid as well, so I can't really say her arguments are all that legitimate).

I never had any problem with any of the animation music characters or storylines for both of these films. And as far as voices go I always did enjoy (and still do) Thumbelina being the same voice as Ariel.
But Anastasia is a little more grown up than Thumbelina is which is probably why I like it better than Thumbelina but I certainly don't hate the Thumbelina film either.

Well, I've always thought Anastasia was more epic than Thumbelina, which I still like, but I think Don Bluth was having a hard time in the nighties because Disney was just coming off the success of the Little Mermaid, and Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin came out after that, and they were both big successes and are now part of the Disney Renaissance, which took place in the late eighties and ended in the nighties, so I don't think it has anything to with Don Bluth's movies being bad at the time.

I like them both. There aren't actually movies that I really hate. It's just that I don't like the movies enough to watch them again.
I like Anastasia. It's a really beautiful and funny movie. Also Thumbelina is really fun, but I just like Anastasia more.
